Happy Thanksgiving

The war in Ukraine has become more harsh, oppressive, and dangerous for citizens in cities. Nightly drone and rocket attacks knock out power grids and missiles are often targeted into centers for housing.

What are we doing? In our relatively safe corner of south/western Ukraine, we offer a shelter of emotional safety. Mothers and children find support in relationships. The faith, the love, and the trust they share give them hope.

I see a new way of understanding our mission. I believe our space in Ukraine is sacred. I take the concrete steps down into our Center and I believe there is more in this world than the war and hatred for the enemy, and the troubles I feel. I see the beautiful picture we have created with relationships.

I am not just helping Ukrainian families and children endure, grow in character, and hope together. I am a witness to a longer story in which we stand in God’s love and grace.

No matter how dark the suffering, how close to the borders of depression we might at times feel, how much it may seem that bad news is exploding all around, we live in the presence of hope. And I am grateful.

This is what I am Thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Giving Tuesday is coming up. I encourage you to give to programs with low overhead where you know people personally and know how your gift will be used. If you are thinking about giving to This Child Here, take a look at our site:  https://www.thischildhere.org/thinking-of-giving

THIS ESPECIALLY FOR PRESBYTERY STAFF:  If congregations are interested in taking a small group to volunteer in recovery efforts in the Asheville/Swannanoa/Black Mt area and are looking for low cost accommodations, send me an email. I have a place that is $20 per person per night with a minimum of 5 persons.

Attached below are more reasons to be Thankful. Youth and children in our program are having a different experience than most others of the war in Ukraine. They are learning how to endure, grow in character, and hope together.

Grace and Peace,

Robert Gamble
